In November 1974, we took a month-long auto trip west. Leaving the Washington, DC, area, we traveled on Interstate highways down through Virginia and Tennessee to Fort Smith, AR. From Fort Smith, it was a straight route through Oklahoma and Texas to Tucumcari and then on to Albuquerque, NM, to visit my family for Thanksgiving. After our stop in New Mexico, we headed west for the Grand Canyon and then on to Los Angeles. After LA, we headed north along the Pacific Coast Highway, making a stop at San Simeon to see La Cuesta Encantada, William Randolph Hearst's famed castle. After that spectacular stop, we traveled on to San Francisco, up to the wine country and a visit to Sebastiani Vineyards, and then started our long trek home. We saw Boulder Dam as we passed through Las Vegas, visited El Paso, TX and its border town, Juarez, Mexico, and then made a final major stop in Dallas to visit the site of the JFK assassination, which had occurred only 11 years earlier, What you are about to see is a selection of highlights of the many photos we took along the way.
